✒️ What is Canting?

Canting is a traditional tool used in hand-drawn Batik (also known as Batik Tulis). It plays a crucial role in applying hot wax onto fabric to create intricate and beautiful designs.

🔥 How Does It Work?

• The wax is first melted in a pot.

• The canting is then dipped into the hot wax.

• It has two holes:

  • A larger hole at the top is used to fill the canting with hot wax.

  • A smaller spout (at the tip) allows the wax to flow out slowly as you draw on the fabric.

As the wax flows from the canting, it forms a resist layer that prevents dye from coloring the areas where wax is applied—allowing for layered, multicolored patterns after dyeing.

How to Hold Canting

To hold a canting (also known as a canting stick or canting tool) properly, follow these steps:

1. **Grip**: Hold the canting firmly with your dominant hand, using your thumb and fingers to control the tool. The handle should rest comfortably in your palm.

2. **Position**: Angle the canting to ensure the nib is pointing downwards at about a 45-degree angle. This allows for smooth movement and better control of the wax.

3. **Stability**: Use your other hand to stabilize the surface you’re working on, especially if you're drawing designs. This helps maintain accuracy.

4. **Pressure**: Apply even pressure as you draw, but adjust based on the desired thickness of the line. Too much pressure can lead to blobs, while too little can create thin, inconsistent lines.

5. **Practice**: As with any tool, practice is key. Experiment with different speeds and pressure to find what works best for you.

Before Canting, draw the design on the fabric with pencil, or color pencil. Make the design is clear and visible, as this will guide you when applying the hot wax with the canting tool.
